Acoustic Neuroma
Also called: Acoustic neurilemmoma, Acoustic neurinoma, Auditory tumor, Vestibular schwannoma
An acoustic neuroma is a benign tumor that grows on the nerve connecting the ear to the brain. It usually grows slowly and presses against the hearing and balance nerves. If it grows large enough, it can press against the brain and become life-threatening.
Symptoms
- Loss of hearing on one side
- Ringing in ears
- Dizziness and balance problems
- Numbness or paralysis of the face (if tumor grows large)
Causes
The exact cause is not fully understood, but if tumors affect both hearing nerves, it is often due to a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis.
Diagnosis
Acoustic neuroma can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms are similar to middle ear problems. Ear exams, hearing tests, and scans can show if you have it.
Treatment
If the tumor stays small, you may only need to have it checked regularly.
Medications
- Bevacizumab (for NF2-related cases)
- Icotinib
- Lapatinib
- Everolimus
- Selumetinib
- Brigatinib
When to see a doctor
You should see a doctor if you experience hearing loss on one side, ringing in the ears, dizziness, or balance problems.
Frequently asked questions
Is acoustic neuroma cancerous?
No, acoustic neuroma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor.
What are the first symptoms of acoustic neuroma?
Early symptoms may include loss of hearing on one side, ringing in the ears, and dizziness or balance problems.
How is acoustic neuroma diagnosed?
Doctors use ear exams, hearing tests, and scans to diagnose acoustic neuroma.
What treatments are available for acoustic neuroma?
If the tumor is small, you may only need regular check-ups. If treatment is needed, surgery and radiation are options.
Can acoustic neuroma be life-threatening?
If it grows large enough, it can press against the brain and become life-threatening.
