When you receive the Seal you will have help from God when you have any mental health issues. But you need the right spiritual leader--the sealed person--to guide you. You can not depend on your psychiatrist for spiritual counsel. Psychiatrists compared to other kinds of doctors are, as a group, less religious and yet more likely to talk about spiritual matters with their patients. That means they offer help when they do not really believe God themselves.
A recent study was published in the December issue of The American Journal of Psychiatry. The results showed that psychiatrists are the doctors most likely to discuss spiritual matters with their patients. In the study, more than 9 out of 10 of psychiatrists say it is "appropriate" to talk to patients about religion or spirituality, compared to just over half of other kinds of doctors.
Nearly 1 in 5 psychiatrists said they were not religious, while only 1 in 10 other doctors said so. Almost half of psychiatrists rated low on a scale of "intrinsic religiosity" while just over a third of other doctors rated low.
Over 4 out of 5 psychiatrists reported they believe religion leads to increased suffering for some people. Just over 2 out of 5 other doctors saw it that way. And spiritual crisis probably does happen more often for the mentally ill. People who are mentally ill more often feel like God has forsaken them than people with other illnesses. Why did He let them get sick? Does He not care how they think and how they feel?
But around 3 out of 4 of all the doctors and psychiatrists too said that religion and spirituality can help patients cope with illness. So psychiatrists believe religion and spirituality can both help and hurt recovery. Among other doctors, when they are less religious themselves, they are less likely to believe it is right to talk about religion or spirituality with their patients. That is the sensible approach.
The psychiatrists, however, usually believe it is right to discuss religion or spirituality with their patients. They believe circumstances make it necessary. Yet they are the least religious as a group of all the doctors. That is why when you have any mental health problems you need a spiritual leader. You need someone who not only believes God but is close to God. You need someone God Himself favors.
That is why you need to learn from the sealed person. God favors that person. And that person will teach you what you need to learn to recover from illness--to take care of yourself. Religion or spirituality should never be a reason you do not take care of yourself and recover. Anyone who teaches that you should not get medical treatment is deceiving you.
Of course you should make your own decisions about your treatment. But that means you should participate in decision-making. You should participate in your own recovery as much as possible. That is what God wants for you. Around 1 in 10 people (or maybe even more) will get serious depression at some point in their lives. That is a relatively common problem, and it is mental illness.
If you have depression or another mental illness, you need the right spiritual leader. You can not depend on your psychiatrist who knows too little about God. And not only does he or she not know God, but God does not "know" your psychiatrist.
When you are sealed you will participate in your own health care. You will not refuse treatment but make decisions about what will work for you and what will not. And God will help you recover when you receive the Seal.
