Gear Guide: Yoga-Paws

August 27, 2010 By: admin Category: Healthy Living

By Su Reid-St. John Everywhere you turn, there seems to be a new yoga-related must-have that’s really anything but—mat washes made with aromatic oils, übercushioned slip-ons to pamper your tootsies post-class, personalized mats bearing images of such things as your long-lost childhood pet, Fifi. At first glance, I was tempted to put Yoga-Paws in this same category—but then I took a closer look. These are basically square pieces of yoga mat that you wear on your hands and feet and use in place of (or in addition to) your regular yoga mat.

Gear Guide: A Quickie Workout DVD Worth Your Time

August 20, 2010 By: Guest Category: Healthy Living

By Su Reid-St. John With the glut of 10-minute workout DVDs now on the market, you may be tempted to write off the newest offering, 10-Minute Solution: Rapid Results Fat Burner , as just a gimmick. But that would be a mistake. Even though 10 minutes doesn’t make for a complete cardio workout (but it’s a good start), 20 minutes does if it’s intense —and intensity is what this DVD is all about. Like many of its 10-minute siblings, Rapid Results offers five kick-butt workouts you can mix and match in any number and order.

Gear Guide: One Yoga Mat You Can Take on the Road

July 01, 2010 By: admin Category: Healthy Living

By Su Reid-St. John I love starting the day with a sun salutation or two, but that can be hard to do when I’m traveling. I mean, who wants to risk developing rug burn or sliding face first on to a slippery floor while down-dogging? Not me. Enter Manduka’s new eKO SuperLite Travel Mat , just in time for my vacation. The eKO covers the same area as a regular mat, but it’s thinner

By Su Reid-St. John If you’re like me, you have a couple of standard strength workouts that you go back to time and again. Well, it’s time to mix things up, and I have just the device for you: the Valslide . Developed by trainer-to-the-stars Valerie Waters (clients include Jennifer Garner, who reportedly used it to slide back into shape post-baby), the Valslide consists of a pair of foam-topped plastic disks; you put your feet or hands on them, then slide back and forth while doing moves like lunges and push-ups. The accompanying DVD offers two workouts: a 20-minute routine that focuses on the Amazing Seven basic moves, and a 40-minute one that adds some slide-free dumbbell exercises to the mix. Both routines hit muscles all over your body, with emphasis on the core and lower body
